What is Pilates (pronounced: puh-LAH-teez) Mat Exercise?
There are approximately 40 mat exercises - and more when you add variations and modifications - that were designed by Joseph H. Pilates over 90 years ago.. These are done on a mat on the floor. These exercises work to strengthen your “core” (low back and abdominal muscles), lengthen the spine, build muscle tone and increase body awareness and flexibility - just as the movements are performed on the equipment does.
However, on a mat you will work “free form” using your body weight against gravity as resistance. I incorporate additional tools or props such as balls, circles and rollers for improving coordination and for additional work on strengthening and stretching. These exercises are performed without shoes, and comfortable, flexible clothing will allow you to move easily.
What results can be expected?
Performing these mat moves two or more times a week can result in a stronger back and better abdominal muscle tone. You may stand taller with improved posture. These exercises will improve your strength, flexibility, coordination and balance. Pilates mat exercises will not however, provide a cardiovascular workout.
What is the class like?
It’s 60 minutes long. Bring a yoga style mat or an exercise mat that is not too thick. I have a few extras to get you started. The props/tools will be provided. My classes are intentionally small to provide you with maximum attention. The first moves are usually lying face up and begin as warming up exercises. We’ll progress to exercises on your side or front, to seated and then to all fours. The exercises that target improved balance and coordination are standing exercises and I like to end the class with these.
What is the class level?
My classes are multi-level and includes beginners and more experienced participants (remember, these are small classes). No prior movement or exercise experience is necessary. An individual session - a private session - can prepare you for a class and is available upon request.
Do I have to be fit to do Pilates?
No. I work with all levels - beginners and those who are more experienced. All shapes and sizes. No prior movement or exercise experience is necessary. In fact, since this is not a gym setting many who have shied away from exercising find it very inviting!
How does Pilates exercise fit in with my current work out regimen?
Pilates exercises - matwork or equipment work - are a wonderful addition to other fitness activities. Plan on one hour of Pilates twice a week in addition to other activities. Pilates will provide the benefits of improved alignment, core strength and control of movement to these activities.
